PETA opens its 40th theater season with Christine Belen’s Batang Rizal. The story is about Pepito who literally takes a walk down memory lane. He mysteriously finds himself in the past where he meets a young boy - Jose "Pepe" Rizal. Concert at the Park: Bossa Sessions. Aug. 26, 5 p.m. Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium, Manila. Featuring the latest bossa nova sensation Pavi and her band, Tropicalia.

Destination: Bossa Live! The Repeat. Aug. 25, 8 p.m. at The Captains Bar of the Mandarin Oriental Manila. Just for one night, the country’s premiere vocal group, The CompanY restages its successful concert series. Tickets for the show are priced at P500++. Luke Mejares Vis-Min Concert Tour. July 20 to Aug. 25.

R&B singer Luke Mejares will stage a concert tour featuring songs from his sophomore album Pangako, including "You had me at Hello" and "Pangako Yan". The tour continues at the Pagadian Gym, Pagadian City, Aug. 24; and, Dipolog Gym, Dipolog City, Aug. 25.

Pilipinas Circa 1907. Aug. 10 to September. Little Theater, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City.

Tanghalang Pilipino opens its 21st season with presentations of Nicanor Tiongson’s zarsuela Pilipinas Circa 1907. Set in the period prior to national elections in 1907, the story tells about political conflict and family relations getting in the way of two pairs of star-crossed lovers when America was more in the heart. The music was composed by Chino Toledo, Nicanor Abelardo, Scott Joplin and five Filipino composers. Dennis Marasigan directs Ana Feleo, Lani Mabilangan Ligot, Arnold Reyes, Miguel Castro, Nazer Salcedo, Bong Cabrera, Dido de la Paz, Lu Veloso, Roeder Camanag and others. Piano at Pan Pacific. Every Friday, 7-10 p.m. Pacific Lounge, Pan Pcific Manila, M.H. del Pilar St., Ermita, Manila.

Pianist Eisha del Villar performs a wide repertoire of music ranging from pop and standards to semi-classica and Broadway hits. She can even oblige guests’ requests to sing a song as she is also a vocalist. There is an ongoing promo at the Lounge in which an a la carte dinner cones with a free dessert from the buffet table or a glass of house wine. The promo is ongoing until Aug. 31. We’re Gonna Go Dancing!!! Aug. 24 and 25, 8 p.m. CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute (Studio Theater) Cultural Center of the Philippines. The Japan Contemporary Dance Network makes a stopover in Manila as part of its five-city tour of Southeast Asia. Participating artists include Ko&Edge Co., Ho Ho-Do, Pink, and Hiroyuki Miura. Also performing is Filipina dancer Ava Maureen Villanueva. Tickets are at P200 each. Students with valid IDs get 50% discount.

EXHIBITS

Asian Social Institute. The Rhythm of Life in Manila, a photo exhibit featuring historical photos and contemporary photos by Jun Refor, Bernard Fernando, and Roland Roldan, is on view until Aug. 31 at the Asian Social Institute, Leon Guinto, Manila. A historical background on Manila and the Pasig River has been provided by writer Chit de la Torre. For details call 523-3483.

Avellana Art Gallery. Ivi Avellana-Cosio’s latest major solo exhibition, Repaso (Artmaking 1967-2007), features over 100 artworks in various media including ethnic-inspired contemporary paintings (the Baybayin series) in acrylic on canvas and handmade paper, large-size scrolls, abstracts in lacquer on wood and acrylic on canvas, fine prints, photographs, nudes in pastel and pen-and-ink, and flowers in acrylic and oil pastel. Ayala Museum. The Camera Club of the Philippines (CCP) launches its 80th year with a photo exhibit at the Ayala Museum until Aug. 29. Entitled Elements, the exhibition will focus on the four basic elements of nature. Damian Domingo: The First Great Filipino Painter is a pioneering attempt to bring together a representative collection of the entire spectrum of Domingo’s oeuvre: previously unseen religious images from the Ongpin collection, portrait miniatures, and his albums of Philippine costumes. The Ongpin collection paintings will be on a five-year loan to the Ayala Museum and will be shown to the public for the first time. The exhibit is on view at the Third Floor Galleries until January. blanc. Ideal Theories and Other Trivial Matters of the Heart, featuring works by Paulo Vinluan, runs until Aug. 29 at blanc, 107 H.V. dela Costa St. Salcedo Village, Makati.

Cafe Theo. A Piece of Mind, an exhibit of art works by Sharon Atillo, Corinne Ching and Mimi Sanson, better known for their fashion at the I Love You Store, is on view until Sept. 1 at the Theo Gallery of Cafe Saguijo, Guijo St., San Antonio Village, Makati, For details call 0917-898-3036.

Crucible Gallery. Limited edition reproductions by Anita Magsaysay Ho entitled Flowers are on view at the SM Megamall gallery until Aug. 26. Along with these are two of her egg tempera paintings. The egg tempera’s are for exhibition purposes only while the reproductions which comes in set of four in an edition of 300 will be available for sale.

Cultural Center of the Philippines. Tagahasa, an exhibit of works by JayFlores Ticar, at the Center’s Bulawagang Fernando Amorsolo (Small Gallery), and Pagtatagpi, an exhibit of works by Bryan Taon Quesada, at the Pasilyo Victorio Edades (4th floor hallway) are on view until Sept. 23. Hiraya Gallery.Painter Jinky Lorenzo-Reynoso presents fragments of lifetime memories and the harrowed fields of emotions as immortalized in acrylic. The exhibit, dubbed Mystic Ranges opens at Hiraya Gallery at UN Ave., Ermita. The exhibit runs until Sept. 23.

Lopez Museum. Dime a Dozen attempts to map the journey of cultural objects across social strata and across trendy crosscurrents and channels. The works of 19th century Filipino masters Juan Luna and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo and contemporary Filipino artists Tad Ermitaño, Alwin Reamillo and Gerardo Tan are some of the pieces featured. The Lopez Memorial Museum is at the ground floor, Benpres Bldg., Exchange Rd. corner Meralco Ave., Pasig.

Metropolitan Museum. The museum in cooperation with Galerie Astra, presents Rocked Age, Images of Loud Music Culture at the Upper Galleries of the museum until Oct. 26. The museum and the Embassy of Japan present Musubitsuki: Japanese Images and The-matics in Philippine Art exhibit until Oct. 5 at the Tall Galleries.

The National Museum of the Philippines is holding two exhibitions that focus on the themes of women and the city. Posing Women: Appearance and Revision and City Limits: Scenes from the Urban Landscape. The exhibits are on view at the ground and fourth floors of the Museum of the Filipino people along Finance Road and T. Valencia Circle until Sept. 15.

silverlens gallery. The exhibit Isa Lorenzo, 001 is made up of one-of-a-kind collaged darkroom photographs of the old Malate, Manila house where the artist, Isa Lorenzo, grew up in. In connection with the exhibit, there will Saturday Gallery Events that are open to the public. On Aug. 25, Ms. Lorenzo will be giving an Artist Talk from 3 to 5 p.m. On the closing day of the show, Sept. 1, members of the String Section of the Manila Symphony Orchestra will be performing the same pieces in solo at different parts of the gallery from 3 to 5 p.m. The audience is invited to complete the performance by walking through the show and experiencing the different soundscapes. West Gallery. Jucar Raquepo presents Various Conformations until Aug. 25 at the West Avenue, QC branch of the gallery. In this exhibit the artist lends his own touch to abstract art: combining illustrations, rough sketches and graffiti-like designs against the backdrop of familiar shapes and forms.

WhiteBox. Four young artists - Melvin Arlequi, Raymond Go, Marcial Pontillas and Jon Jaylo - present an exhibit called Match at the Whitebox Studio at the Cubao Expo (formerly the Marikina shoe Expo) in Cubao, QC. Exhibit runs until Aug. 26 For details call 437-3839.

Kagay-an Festival. Until Aug. 28, SM City Cagayan de Oro

The mall celebrates the Kagay-an Festival with a series of events this month. There will be a series of competitions that are sure to delight car and motorcycle enthusiasts, including the 3rd National Quartermile Sprint, which is a 400-meter dash sprint drag race at Las Ramblas in the province. Mallgoers will have a chance to meet singer Nina during her album tour on Aug. 25.

Philippine Exhibition of The Mystery of the Shroud of Turin. Ongoing until Aug. 19 at SM City-Pampanga; SM Mall of Asia, Sept. 8 to Dec. 9; SM Davao, Jan. 18 to Feb. 3; SM City Cebu, April 4-27.
